Feroza (Turquoise) Stone: Authenticity, Care & Styling in Silver Jewelry

Feroza — turquoise — is prized for a color that genuinely doesn't occur anywhere else in the gem world: that particular robin's-egg to sky blue, sometimes shifting toward green depending on the copper and iron content in the deposit it formed in. It's also one of the most heavily treated and imitated stones sold today, which makes buyer knowledge worth having.

Why turquoise gets treated so often

Natural turquoise is porous, which makes it prone to absorbing oils and changing color over time if left completely untreated. Because of this, most turquoise on the market — including a lot of genuinely natural material — is stabilized with a clear resin to protect the color and structure. Stabilization is a legitimate, disclosed practice, not a red flag by itself. What matters is whether the seller tells you.

What to check before buying

• Ask directly whether the stone is natural, stabilized, or reconstituted. Reconstituted turquoise (crushed fragments bonded with resin) is a different, lower-value product than a natural or stabilized stone, and should be priced and disclosed accordingly.
• Look for natural matrix veining. Genuine turquoise often shows fine, irregular dark veining (matrix) running through the blue — a pattern that's hard to fake convincingly.
• Be wary of perfectly uniform color. Dyed howlite or magnesite (both naturally white/grey stones) are commonly dyed blue to imitate turquoise. Their color tends to be flatter and more evenly saturated than real turquoise's natural variation.

Caring for Feroza jewelry

Turquoise is soft — around 5–6 on the Mohs scale — and sensitive to chemicals, heat, and prolonged sun exposure, all of which can dull or shift its color over time. Avoid perfumes, lotions, and cleaning products touching the stone directly, and store it separately from harder gemstones that could scratch it.
